Honda Cars India to Enter Sub-4 Metre SUV Segment with New Model Planned for 2028 Launch
Honda Cars India has confirmed plans to launch a new sub-four-metre sport utility vehicle in 2028, positioned below the Elevate. Announced during its global financial results, the move targets high-growth segments in India, including compact and mid-size categories, alongside digital expansion and financial services initiatives.
The announcement was made during Honda’s recent global financial results presentation, where the automaker outlined its long-term growth roadmap for India. The company confirmed that it is actively preparing new strategic models for two high-demand segments in the country, specifically the sub-four-metre category and the mid-size vehicle category, both of which continue to witness strong consumer demand in the Indian automotive market.
Alongside its product expansion strategy, Honda also highlighted its intent to leverage its motorcycle business in India as a key driver of future growth. The company plans to target customers who are upgrading from motorcycles to passenger cars, positioning its automotive offerings as a natural progression for two-wheeler owners entering the four-wheeler segment. As part of this strategy, Honda has established Honda Digital Innovation India, a dedicated digital platform company aimed at strengthening its technological and digital capabilities in the country. The automaker is also working on expanding its sales operations through multiple initiatives, including the creation of a new captive finance company in India.
The compact sport utility vehicle segment in India remains one of the most competitive automotive categories. It includes established models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Skoda Kylaq. These vehicles offer a wide range of powertrain options, including compressed natural gas and turbocharged petrol engines, catering to diverse customer preferences at competitive price points. Honda’s upcoming model will need to adopt a similarly versatile approach to succeed in this highly contested segment, particularly as it will be developed specifically for the Indian market.
The planned introduction of the sub-four-metre sport utility vehicle underscores Honda Cars India’s renewed focus on expanding its presence in high-volume segments, while aligning its product and business strategy with evolving consumer demand patterns in India.
